Call for solidarity and action on World Migrant and Refugee Day

Dear friends from around the world,

On 24 September 2023, in this World Day of Migrants and Refugeeswe are coming together to reaffirm our commitment to dignity, compassion and solidarity to our brothers and sisters seeking refuge and a better life. It's an opportunity for all of us to remember that we are bound together by our common humanity, and that every individual deserves respect and the chance to live in peace.

The world is witnessing massive population displacements caused by conflict, persecution and humanitarian crises. These displacements are not just statistics; they are lives turned upside down, dreams shattered and families torn apart. As a global community, we have a responsibility to respond to this humanitarian crisis with compassion and pragmatism.

When we welcome migrants and refugees, we do so not out of charity, but because it strengthens our societies and our collective humanity. Migrants and refugees bring with them a wealth of culture, talent and resilience that can help build stronger, more vibrant communities.

However, it is also essential to recognise that World Migrant and Refugee Day should be more than just a celebration of diversity. It is a call to action for governments, international organisations, NGOs and individuals. We must work for fair and humane migration policies, effective asylum systems and initiatives that promote integration and inclusion.

Together, we can create a world where everyone, whatever their nationality or origin, has the opportunity to fulfil their potential. We can build bridges rather than walls, and work towards a future where migration is synonymous with opportunity and hope, not despair.

On this World Day of Migrants and Refugees, let us pledge to be defenders of humanity, to reach out to those in need and to work together for a more welcoming and compassionate world. This is our duty as citizens of the world.
