Revelation of a Secret Political Agreement: Corneille Nangaa confirms

At the 78ᵉ United Nations General Assembly in New York, the president of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Félix Tshisekedi, said that no fraudulent arrangements had taken place between him and his predecessor, Joseph Kabila, during the December 2018 presidential elections.

However, the former president of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI), Corneille Nangaa, who is currently in exile, has confirmed the existence of a secret political agreement between Tshisekedi and Kabila. According to Nangaa, he helped draft the agreement, which was signed by the two leaders before the election results were published.

This agreement, entitled Agreement on stability in the Democratic Republic of Congo" It has been certified and validated by three African heads of state, and has been hailed for enabling a peaceful transition of power in the DRC.

Nangaa emphasised that this agreement had led to the establishment of several institutions of the Republic, including the government and the offices of the National Assembly and Senate.

He believes that President Tshisekedi has deliberately chosen to deny the existence of this agreement with 90 days to go before the end of his mandate, but he will have to face up to the consequences of his actions as the 20 December deadline approaches.

Nangaa concluded by pointing out that the political agreement was a historical fact well established in the Congolese collective memory, and that its public disclosure was inevitable. He also stressed the importance of keeping one's word in politics.
