Every year on 25 April, the International Day of Girls in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) is celebrated. The aim of the day is to highlight the importance of gender equality in these fields and to encourage careers in sectors traditionally dominated by men. This year, Asbl LEKCYA (LEKAVOT CITY FOR YOUTH AFRIKA) organised a major event at the Collège Frère Alingba in Kintambo, in collaboration with the Congregation of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. The event, entitled "Building a secure and promising digital future for young girls".The event brought together 184 students, including 174 girls and 10 boys, and 20 teachers. The aim of this initiative was to make young girls aware of the opportunities offered by the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), while at the same time raising their awareness of the responsible and secure use of digital technology.
The choice of this theme was strategic, as it is essential to bridge the gender gap in the digital sector. Currently, only 26 % of jobs in this sector are held by women. Asbl LEKCYA and the Christian Brothers congregation are determined to change this reality by offering educational programmes, training and networking opportunities to develop women's digital skills, self-confidence and autonomy.
The event was divided into two main conferences. The first lecture introduced the participants to the many fields of STEM, opening up their horizons to the exciting career opportunities available to them. The girls were able to discover the richness of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and were encouraged to pursue their interests in these fields.
The second conference focused on digital safety. Participants were made aware of the risks associated with online privacy, cyberbullying and other digital dangers. They learned how to navigate responsibly in the ever-changing digital world, while being encouraged to use their digital skills ethically and responsibly.
In addition to the conferences, the event offered young girls opportunities for exchange and interaction with experienced professionals. Practical workshops and discussions enabled participants to share their aspirations, experiences and questions, while benefiting from the advice and encouragement of inspiring female role models.
This fruitful collaboration between Asbl LEKCYA and the Congregation of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, represented by the Reverend Brother Roger MASAMBA, bears witness to a shared commitment to strengthening the presence and influence of women in the digital field. Together, these two organisations are actively working to reduce the gender gap by offering educational and professional development opportunities to young girls.
Brenda Ndaya Kanyinda, President of the Asbl, told us: "We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all the participants, teachers, speakers and the entire Asbl organising team who contributed to the success of this event. Together, we are shaping an egalitarian, secure and promising digital future for young girls.
In conclusion, the event "Building a secure and promising digital future for young girls". was an important step in promoting gender equality and the development of digital skills. Asbl LEKCYA and the Congregation of the Brothers of the Christian Schools will continue to work together to provide young girls with the tools they need to succeed in the ever-changing digital world.
