In 2025, a digital revolution is underway in Europe: a new era for smartphones

From June 2025, the telecommunications landscape in Europe is set to undergo a major transformation. An unprecedented regulatory framework is about to see the light of day, with the ambition of marking a decisive stage in the evolution of smartphones. The aim? To extend the lifespan of these devices and significantly reduce their environmental impact.

One of the key innovations of this future regulation is the introduction of an obligation for manufacturers to ensure that their devices are updated for a minimum of seven years. Industry giants such as Samsung and Google have already anticipated this requirement, adapting their policies to comply with this future European standard.

Another pillar of this initiative is the integration of artificial intelligence into battery management. This technological advance promises unprecedented optimisation of the energy use of smartphones, adapted to the individual habits of each user. As a result, not only should the devices enjoy a longer lifespan, but they will also contribute to considerable energy savings, estimated at 14 terawatts/hour by 2030.

However, this development raises questions about the future of entry-level smartphones. The implementation of such measures could redefine standards of quality and durability, pointing to an uncertain future for the most affordable models.

At the same time, the European Union is preparing to introduce a standardised test protocol, aimed at comprehensively assessing the performance of mobile phones. Autonomy, energy efficiency, shock resistance and repairability will now be transparent and comparable criteria, giving consumers a clear and precise vision for choosing their future smartphone with full knowledge of the facts.

These new regulations outline a future where technology and environmental responsibility meet, paving the way for more conscious and sustainable consumption of mobile technologies.
