On the sidelines of his participation in the 78ᵉ session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the President of the Republic, Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, had a one-to-one meeting with the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, on Friday 22 September.
The meeting, which lasted almost an hour on the 27ᵉ floor of the UN Glass Palace, took place behind closed doors, with no public statement to the press at the end.
This meeting had been planned for a long time, coming 48 hours after President Félix Tshisekedi's speech to the UN, in which he called for the withdrawal of UN peacekeepers from the Congo to be speeded up.
For President Tshisekedi, the departure of MONUSCO troops (United Nations Mission for the Stabilisation of the Congo) has become a necessity after more than 25 years of presence without satisfactory results in terms of carrying out their mission. Negotiations on the practical details of this withdrawal are currently underway between Kinshasa and UN headquarters.
