Doctors without mechanisation in the DRC: an extraordinary strike paralyses health facilities

Since Wednesday 8 August, a three-day strike has paralysed public health establishments across the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), according to the Syndicat libre des médecins du Congo (SYLIMED).

André Kasongo, the union's general secretary, announced the strike at a press conference in Kinshasa.

The doctors are on a work stoppage to demand three essential things from the government: mechanisation, improved working conditions and alignment with risk premium.

According to André Kasongo, the strike is the result of the government's failure to honour the commitment it made last July to improve doctors' working conditions during the second phase.

The Syndicat libre des médecins du Congo has also given the government an ultimatum, expiring on Thursday, to respond to their concerns, failing which the strike will be extended.

"If no instructions or guidelines are given, we will be forced to go to the Prime Minister's Office for a sit-in. And we will seek to extend our work stoppage. And I think our strike will go on until the elections", warned André Kasongo.
