Volunteering opportunities for young people in Africa: African Union Youth Volunteer Corps (AUYVC)

The African Union Youth Volunteer Corps (AUYVC) is a flagship youth leadership programme in Africa, established in 2010. The programme recruits, trains and deploys young professionals from the 55 Member States of the African Union to serve as professional volunteers for a period of 12 months. The initiative aims to promote volunteerism to strengthen the role of young people as key actors in achieving Africa's development goals and to increase their participation in policies, programmes and initiatives that contribute to the achievement of the AU's Agenda 2063 - 'The Africa We Want'.

The AUYVC programme is rooted in the core values of the African Union, including respect for diversity, teamwork, transparency, accountability, integrity, impartiality, efficiency, professionalism and the sharing of information and knowledge.

Who can apply?

To be eligible for the AUYVC programme, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be a citizen of an AU member state, living on the continent or in the diaspora.
  2. Be aged between 18 and 35 (must be under 35 at the end of the 12 months of service).
  3. Have a certified post-secondary qualification (TVET, bachelor's degree, master's degree, etc.).
  4. Be available in 2023/24 to devote 12 months to professional voluntary service.
  5. Be prepared to live and work in another AU Member State.
  6. Be proficient in at least one of the AU's working languages (Arabic, English, French, Portuguese, Swahili, Spanish).
  7. At least one year's verifiable voluntary experience and one year's professional experience.

How do I apply?

The application process is simple.

To apply for the AUYVC programme, follow these steps:

  1. Visit the AU recruitment website : careers.au.intthen click on the AUYVC advert.
  2. If you are already a registered user, log in to your account. If you don't have an account yet, create one.
  3. Fill in your application form with your full personal details.
  4. Attach the following documents:
    • Your updated professional CV (no longer than 3 pages).
    • The biography page of your passport or national identity card.
    • A copy of your highest diploma (transcripts are not accepted).
    • A letter of recommendation (less than 2 years old) attesting to your leadership qualities.
  5. Write a cover letter answering the following questions:
    • Why do you want to become an African Union youth volunteer?
    • What makes you the best candidate for the AUYVC?
    • What skills do you bring to AUYVC and your host organisation?
  6. Read over your application carefully, then submit it before Saturday 30 September 2023 at 11:59 pm, East African Time.

Important advice:

  • Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.
  • Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for the rest of the process.
  • Providing incomplete or incorrect information will result in immediate disqualification.
