President Tshisekedi in New York: A firm commitment to timely elections

President Félix Tshisekedi, travelling to New York for the 78ᵉ session of the United Nations General Assembly, has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to ensuring that the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) organises the general elections within the constitutional timeframe and under optimal conditions.

At an international press conference, the Congolese Head of State underlined his candidacy for the next presidential election, scheduled for December. He also addressed comments made by the former chairman of CENI concerning an alleged arrangement between him and his predecessor during the previous elections. President Tshisekedi emphasised the historic nature of the peaceful and democratic alternation at the top of the State in the DRC, stressing that this was an unprecedented achievement in the country. He also said that those alleging electoral fraud should provide tangible proof and identify those responsible.

At this meeting, the Head of State shared his vision for the development of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). He highlighted the fundamental needs of the population, such as peace, education, health and employment, underlining the importance of gradually rebuilding a solid nation and stimulating the Congolese renaissance. President Tshisekedi also highlighted recent major social achievements, including free basic education and free maternity and newborn care.

Turning to current affairs, President Tshisekedi expressed his attachment to freedom of expression and to a free and pluralist press. He also emphasised his respect for the principle of the separation of powers and affirmed that he had no influence over the judiciary.
